The key issue of the debate was whether or not slavery was to be allowed in the territories of the states. This debate began in 1858. The main people were Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. Douglas's plan was to make Lincoln seem as a black Republican that wanted to emancipate slavery. Lincoln pushed for the reconcilliation of popular soverignty during the Dredd Scott decision. In the end, Lincoln ended up losing the Senate seat, but made him seriously appropriate for the position of president.

This debate between Douglas and Lincoln was important because of the priciple it established regarding slavery. During these debates the most important one was in Freeport illinois. Over 15000 people attended in a town which the population was 5000. This freeport debate was important because what came out of it was the freeport doctrine which was raised in this debate and it stated that people had the right to choose wheather or not to exclude slavery from there limits.

Stephen A Douglas: was on the other side of the debate his Freeport Doctrine during the debate cost him the election.
A. Lincoln: was on the other side of the debate and showed strength as a leader.
4. Provide a one paragraph summary of the important elements of this event/ topic.
This debate between Lincoln and Douglas was an old facion mud slinging contest. These two were excelent at debates they dicussed all the most important current events of the day. The debates drew huge crowds of people to watch. In the end Douglos won the debates and became senetor.

The significance of this event was its effect on the presidencial election of 1860. Something about the election hurt Douglas's chances of being president. His clever avoidence of answering difficult questions during the debates caused people to think that he did not completly support there views. In 1858 Abe Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas engaged in heated debates across the nation, Douglas was a prominent and radical political figure, while Abe Lincoln was not well-known outside of Illinois. In an effort to increase his visibility Lincoln engaged Douglas in these debates. They were both competing for a seat in the senate. The main topic being debated was slavery. Douglas had no moral postition on slavery, Lincoln thought it was morally wrong but was not an albolitionist, he just didn't want slavery to expand westward. He argued that if it did expand then oppurtunities for poor white laborers in the West would be lost. He also argued that if blacks were not entitled to basic human rights then other groups like immigrant laborers would be deprived of their rights also. Some called it a "mud-slinging contest" and it drew huge crowds of people wherever they debated.
